"Los Lagos" Region

The region of the Lakes

Chile is dividided in 12 regions, plus the Metropolitan Region, that includes the Capital, Santiago and is the political and administrative center of the country. The area that includes the southern regins begins in the VIIIth Region and ends in the XIIth and the Antartic Continent.

The Xth region is called the Region of the Lakes (Región de Los Lagos) and has the following features :

This region, as its name indicates it, is characterized by its enormous amount of lakes, some of them are "Calafquén", "Pirihueico", "Panguipulli", "Riñihue", "Ranco", "Rupanco", "Todos Los Santos" and "Llanquihue". As you see, most of them still have the names the original inhabitants of this land gave them. All of the lakes were formed by glaciars that don't exists now. The bigger one is the Llanquihue; it is a place with good beaches, nautic sports, fishing and beautiful sightseeing; in Sommer, in Frutillar, you can find very goods concerts of classic music.Some beautiful towns oround the lake are Puerto Varas, Llanquihue, Puerto Octay and Frutillar.

In this region you will find the citys of Osorno, Valdivia and the Regional Capital, Puerto Montt. There you will find general services, banks, hotels, etc..

Toward the south and the west of this region it is the sea and Chiloé Island. This island is the begining of "Chile Insular", many little islands and fiords almost in its natural estate.

You will find interesting evidence of the cultures that have lived in this region, for exemple, in the coast line there is a serie of spanish fortresses that were used like protection against the english ships which headed to Peru and had suvived the Hornos Cape. In Chiloé island the people yet has its own culture with a very peculiar arquitecture and delicius food.
